THE FUTURE OF DATA LICENSING
In pursuit of data immortality. Data from smaller studies can often remain siloed in the laboratories that generated them, fading from memory as project members leave. For the scientific community, that’s a tragedy of wasted effort, lost collaborative opportunities and irreproducibility. The good news is that more sophisticated data-management solutions are emerging. The FAIR Principles, which aim to ensure that scientific data should be ‘findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable’, have been adopted to inspire fundamental changes to how data are managed and shared.

Time to recognize authorship of open data. The open data revolution won’t happen unless the research system values the sharing of data as much as authorship on papers.
Springer Nature and Figshare have launched a free pilot to better support authors in making their data openly available. Authors will now be able to easily opt into data sharing, via Figshare, as part of one integrated submission process.
